Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity within our Mechanical Design Group for a talented and innovative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.  Reporting to one of our Suspension Lead Engineers, the successful candidate will primarily be responsible for major mechanical and composite design projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Design and development of composite and metallic suspension solutions, from concept through to delivery.  Working closely with aero, vehicle dynamics, structural and manufacturing departments you will produce designs combining high levels of performance and reliability.

  • Work closely with FE engineers to optimise and develop structural designs and processes to give the highest level of integrity.

  • Definition and management of performance and reliability lab testing programs for relevant designs & projects.

  • Reliability management of components, following them throughout their life cycle from first assembly to end of track life.

  • Close collaboration with other engineering departments and external suppliers to ensure fully integrated system designs achieving optimal car performance.

  • Use of Catia FEA to support your own designs

Candidate Profile:

  • Mechanical, automotive or aeronautical engineering degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar qualification.

  • Substantial and recent high level structural design experience in F1, another top level motorsport category or an equivalent high level engineering industry.

  • Good knowledge of composite components, tooling systems, materials and industry production techniques is an advantage.

  • Understanding and use of finite element analysis tools and hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs, analysing and questioning results as appropriate.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team have joined forces with INEOS Britannia, as Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup competition, to be hosted in Barcelona in 2024. This project brings together two highly complementary spheres of high-performance, high-technology engineering and sporting challenge, with the goal of being the first British team to win the America’s Cup in its 173-year history.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work on a variety of projects across the race yacht’s foils, sailing systems and hull platform. The role will take assigned projects from engineering design through test and implementation onto the boat, using an analytical approach alongside a high attention to detail.  You must be comfortable challenging yourself and others with respect and passion to drive our projects forward whilst striving to achieve the best possible results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with Hydro and Aerodynamicists, Structural Engineers, and other engineering departments you will produce optimised designs to achieve the highest levels of performance and reliability.

  • Take technical ownership of a variety of projects across the yacht, encompassing both metallic and composite design.

  • Generating 3D models, Assemblies and 2D drawings including defining and documenting manufacturing information.

  • Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs that achieve optimal yacht performance.

  • Support in the definition of performance and reliability test & development programs for relevant designs & projects.

  • Reliability management of assigned systems throughout component life cycle and in support of the team’s reliability function.

Candidate Profile

  • Mechanical, automotive, aeronautical degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar qualification.

  • Proven in-depth understanding of mechanical design and its application with a solid first principles understanding of materials and manufacturing techniques.

  • Experience in Mechanical design in F1, high performance sailing, or another top-level motorsport category is an advantage.

  • Experience of Catia V5/3DX composite and surfacing design package would be beneficial.

  • Use of finite element analysis tools (ideally with Catia V5/3DX package) and hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.

  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills to ensure cross departmental integration.

  • High attention to detail and the ability to work under limited supervision to tight deadlines.

Machine Shop Production Engineer (Ref REQ-220123)

Job Description

A new vacancy has arisen for a Production Engineer working within the Main Machine Shop.

Reporting to a Machine Shop Production Manager, the Production Engineer will work within our Production Engineering group and alongside our CAM Programmer / Machinists to lead, define and improve machining processes with the objective of machining industry leading, high complexity, precision machined components to challenging production schedule targets for our F1 race car and customer programmes.

Key Accountabilities/Duties include:

  • Carry out technical lead role on high complexity / high value manufacturing projects.

  • Advanced use of Siemens NX CAM software to create CNC code for 3, 4 & 5 axis machinery, including mill / turn machines.  

  • Proficient use of Siemens NX CAD to produce models and drawings for work holding / fixturing alongside staged models and any accompanying support information required. 

  • Collaborating with Design Groups to influence design for manufacture.

  • Maintain a close relationship with the machining areas by providing clear, effective communication across all key stakeholders throughout the manufacturing process of components.

  • Collaborating with Inspection to identify and improve G,D & T to aid manufacturing.

  • Take a leading role in developing efficient machining methods with the aim of reducing manufacturing lead times and improving component quality.

  • Creation of setup instructions and shop floor documentation to aid manufacturing processes.

Candidate Profile:

Having served a recognised apprenticeship and holding the relevant qualifications, it is essential that you possess a strong, proven background in programming 5 Axis CNC machines with the aim of delivering the highest levels of quality and efficiency, utilising timely and cost-effective manufacturing methodology. Extensive experience of CAD/CAM is essential with knowledge of Siemens NX and Vericut being highly advantageous.

You will possess effective communication skills and will have the ability to remain focused and objective under pressure. You will be able to demonstrate a process driven mind-set with the capability for logically solving complex problems.  Resilient and professional with a belief in the concept of Continuous Improvement and a keen interest in the development and implementation of modern machining technology. Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Design & development of bespoke PCBs and embedded software.

Job Description

A vacancy has arisen for a Composite Build Technician, reporting to the Composite Build Manager.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the pre-fit and accurate assembly and servicing of composite build assemblies within the department.

Key accountabilities/Duties include:

  • Assembly and pre-fit of floors & bodywork to the team’s documented high standards.

  • Complete assembly of wings, noses & all associated components, ensuring all company and department procedures and quality checks are adhered to.

  • Setup and pressure tap testing of assemblies to required legality, Race Engineering and Aero specifications.

  • Managing the progress of components and assemblies through all the different department processes, throughout every new component manufacture & turnaround.

  • Maintaining accurate event reports for component & assembly mileages, as well as declarations of new components to the FIA using the team’s processes.

  • Managing the replacement of components to meet planned usage and mileage/stock limitations.

  • Allocating and maintaining Heritage components and assemblies.

  • Communication with trackside personnel on specs, trackside requirements and logistics.

  • Constructive reporting of issues, build concerns or failures, using the team’s framework.

  • Using SAP to create build sheets to manage the mileages of assembled components across the planned events and to create stores picks/shortage reports.

  • Carrying out similar skilled duties within the composite department, as and when required.

  • Maintaining good housekeeping at all times and reporting any safety concerns or issues using the company’s framework.

  • To comply with the required daily time bookings using the team’s logging system.

Candidate Profile:

The successful candidate will bring a wide range of experience and skills from an F1 background or similar and be able to combine them with a high attention to detail, they must be well organised with an ability and confidence to work under pressure, to very tight deadlines and as part of a team.

They must have flexibility in hours and be highly driven to perform at the top level of motorsport.

Additional key skills and experience:

  • Experience in mechanical & composite assemblies required.

  • Good knowledge and understanding of mechanical drawings and build processes.

  • Strong computer skills, SAP experience beneficial but not essential.

  • An ability to communicate clearly and confidently with all members of the organisation.
