Job Description

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team are joining forces with INEOS TEAM UK, as the Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup competition. This project brings together two highly complementary spheres of high-performance, high-technology engineering and sporting challenge.  To strengthen our team, we are looking for additional engineers with a background in top-level competitive engineering such as Formula One, America’s Cup or equivalent to join our technical group, based at Brackley.

The Control Systems Engineer role will have responsibility for the design and implementation of control systems destined for the race yacht and test rigs, from high level flight control laws to low level control loops for electro-hydraulics. Working with a dedicated team of control systems engineers and within the Performance group, the successful candidate will need to guide and manage the team to meet project requirements and help deliver a highly capable and robust set of control systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • To develop control systems designs in conjunction with other engineering groups to ensure yacht control is performed within the bounds of competition regulations & to achieve the desired yacht performance. 

  • To apply the best possible development techniques, ensure robust systems are deployed to all facilities (rigs, simulator, yacht) to enable highly efficient use of those facilities. 

  • To participate in design meetings across controls groups and advise on the practical considerations of control systems requirements within.  

Candidate Profile

Required skills:

  • Strong academic background with an appropriate technical Engineering Degree. (e.g. Control Systems, Mechanical or Electronic engineering, Cybernetics, Robotics or similar) 

  • Proven background of model-based design (e.g., Simulink) including code-generation to real-time target systems. Use of advanced techniques (for example: test driven development, large-scale modelling, asynchronous/multi-rate models) will be considered an advantage. 

  • Comfortable taking part or advising on aspects of the control system development focussing on implementation, test development, debugging & support. 

  • Equipped with classical and/or modern control theory skills with demonstrable experience of such systems succeeding in real-world applications. 

  • Able to apply core engineering principles to multi-domain challenges (e.g., across electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic/pneumatic control systems). 

  • Works effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines. 

Desirable skills:

  • Awareness of sailing yachts, especially hydro-foiling racing yachts. 

  • Experience in any of the following technologies is beneficial: dSPACE, TwinCAT, C++, C#, Python, Javascript, Docker. 

  • Experience in any of the following fields is beneficial: HIL, mathematical modelling, sensor fusion, software development, communications protocol definition and implementation (e.g. CAN,UDP), flight control laws, electro-hydraulic actuator control.
