Job Description

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and rising star George Russell.

We have two exciting opportunities for a current university student to join either the Race Engineering or Race Strategy Team on an Industrial Placement.  The destination will be an outcome of the assessment and selection process.

The successful candidates will work as part of the race team running support systems and providing analysis of data for both race and test events. Outside of these events the successful candidates will contribute towards development and automation of tools used within the race team.

Key Accountabilities (Duties):

  • Provide race and test support, factory based, for all events during the year.

  • Assist with pre- and post-event analysis tasks for each event covering data and competitor information.

  • Run and monitor a range of software systems during race and test events, including input parameterisation.

  • Assist with live analysis and support during free-practice, qualifying and races.

  • Carry out ad-hoc tasks, for example investigating trends in data or opponent behaviour.

  • Develop and automate tools and analyse routines in Python and/or JavaScript.

It does not matter whether you already have an interest in motorsport or not: we are looking for candidates who are passionate about reaching their full potential and are excited about constantly learning. Whatever your background, we believe that you will find your placement with us a memorable and enriching experience.

Key Qualifications and Experience:

  • Studying towards an MSC/MEng level degree in Engineering/Maths/Physics/Computer Science.

  • Experience writing code in Python, Matlab or JavaScript is desirable.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment is desirable.

  • Flexibility in hours is required due to the need to work during F1 race weekends.

Flexibility in hours and approach is required, along with a ‘can do’, ‘team-playing’ attitude and the ability to work to strict deadlines under minimal supervision.

We offer a competitive package including bonus, free on-site gym, subsidised restaurant facilities, generous discounts from our sponsors, Christmas & Summer parties and opportunities to work with our factory Race Support team.

We are highly focused on equal opportunities and pride ourselves on our strong, inclusive values and culture.

Recruitment timings and process:

Typically, our Industrial Placements are for a thirteen-month period with an anticipated start date of 3 July 2023.

By the time the placement begins, you must have completed a minimum of two years at university, with at least one academic year of study remaining after your placement.

Application is fully online.  When you apply you will be asked to upload your CV and cover letter (the preferred format is one single pdf file).  You will also complete an online application form including details of your academic study and relevant experience.  Following your application, you will be emailed links to our online testing. The Hiring Manager will review your application and test scores and if successful you will be invited to attend a short video interview.  The final stage will be an assessment centre to be held in late October / November.  This may be virtual or in person.  Due to the volume of applications, we only provide feedback to candidates who are invited to the final stage.

When shortlisting applications, we are looking for relevant university subjects such as Engineering, Maths, Physics and Computer Science.

We welcome applications from all candidates and will look to provide sponsorship to those who require a visa to live and work in the UK, subject to meeting all the necessary Home Office requirements.

All assessments in the recruitment process are in English: this is the primary language used within the organisation and you will need a good command of it in the Industrial Placement role.

This position is office-based, at our campus in Brackley, United Kingdom.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 2nd October 2022 at 23:59 British Summer Time.
