Job Description

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team are joining forces with INEOS TEAM UK, as the Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup competition. This project brings together two highly complementary spheres of high-performance, high-technology engineering and sporting challenge.  To strengthen our team, we are looking for additional engineers with a background in top-level competitive engineering such as Formula One, America’s Cup or equivalent to join our technical group, based at Brackley.

The Control Systems Lead Engineer role will have responsibility for the design and implementation of control systems destined for the race yacht and test rigs, from high level flight control laws to low level control loops for electro-hydraulics. Working with a dedicated team of control systems engineers and within the Performance group, the successful candidate will need to guide and manage the team to meet project requirements and help deliver a highly capable and robust set of control systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the AC37 project controls group, ensuring all group members are equipped to work effectively on the project. 

  • To facilitate strong communications between INEOS TEAM UK and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team controls group personnel irrespective of physical location. 

  • To develop control systems designs in conjunction with other engineering groups to ensure yacht control is performed within the bounds of competition regulations & to achieve the desired yacht performance. 

  • To apply the best possible development techniques, ensure robust systems are deployed to all facilities (rigs, simulator, yacht) to enable highly efficient use of those facilities. 

  • To participate in design meetings across all technical development groups & advise on the practical considerations of control systems requirements within.  

  • To support and mentor team members, foster a team spirit & develop the engineering capabilities within the group. 

  • To manage resource usage within the group, ensuring cost predictions and agreed delivery timescales can be met. 

Candidate Profile

Required skills:

  • Strong academic background with an appropriate technical Engineering Degree. (e.g. Control Systems, Mechanical or Electronic engineering, Cybernetics, Robotics or similar).

  • Proven background of model-based design (e.g., Simulink) including code-generation to real-time target systems. Use of advanced techniques (for example: test driven development, large-scale modelling, asynchronous/multi-rate models) will be considered an advantage. 

  • Proven track record leading a team of skilled engineers or in an existing senior role and ready to take a step up in responsibility. 

  • Comfortable taking part or advising on all aspects of the control system development: architecture & specification, implementation and test development, debugging & support. 

  • Equipped with classical and/or modern control theory skills with demonstrable experience of such systems succeeding in real-world applications. 

  • Able to apply core engineering principles to multi-domain challenges (e.g., across electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic/pneumatic control systems). 

  • Capable of communicating complex concepts to management or other groups of engineers with different domain specialities (e.g., electronics, mechanical, performance analysts).

  • Works effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines. 

Desirable skills:

  • Awareness of sailing yachts, especially hydro-foiling racing yachts. 

  • Experience in any of the following fields is beneficial: HIL, mathematical modelling, sensor fusion, software development, communications protocol definition/implementation (e.g. CAN, UDP), flight control laws, electro-hydraulic actuator control.

The Software Engineer role requires individuals to create, develop and maintain software infrastructure and tools to support the activities of the whole performance group as well as those from other technical groups, facilitating the development of yacht performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • To create innovative software solutions based on the requirements of highly technical user groups.

  • To further develop existing toolsets to achieve aims for more effective & efficient performance analysis, and to assist planning a route for such development.

  • To liaise with key user groups to understand and implement requirements using appropriate software technologies.

  • To promote modern working practices in software engineering – CI/CD/DevOps, configuration-as-code, test driven development, micro-service architectures, etc.

Candidate Profile

  • Degree in Computer Science (or similar), or relevant experience. 

  • Experience working in high performing teams, delivering solutions to complex problems. 

  • Extensive knowledge of the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and willingness to own delivery from requirement analysis through to deployment.

The Modelling Engineer role requires individuals to create, develop and maintain mathematical models of the yacht including its physics and those of the fluids it works within and the onboard electrical and hydraulic systems. The accuracy of these models and their applicability to the simulation and optimisation use-cases is crucial for performance discovery and design. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain high fidelity models of boat and sub-systems physics, working with Fluids and Design groups to capture appropriate levels of functionality. 

  • Work with Performance and Simulation group to integrate software models into both the simulation toolset architecture and to support the physical simulator. 

  • Work with Performance and Validation groups to validate models and correlate them with physical measurements. 

Candidate Profile

  • A strong degree in a related technical discipline (engineering, maths, physics, etc.) 

  • Excellent grounding in engineering numerical methods, classical mechanics, and multi-body dynamics. Relevant experience in non-linear programming techniques and optimal control will be considered beneficial.

Job Description

A vacancy has arisen for a Build Component Logistics Coordinator reporting to the Build Supply Manager.

The successful candidate will coordinate the supply of new and current components through the business to the Build departments to a defined schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively chase components required for each event for the Build Departments through the various supporting areas (including Inspection, NDT, R&D and Composites), ensuring that all areas of the business are working to the correct priorities.

  • Generate component delivery reports to the Build Departments to enable correct resource planning for each event.

  • Ensure the New Parts List is up to date for each event and the required parts make it to the relevant event.

  • Attend Race and Test events as required in support of the programme.

  • Compile and filter shortage information from all the Build Areas and work with Planning to ensure these requirements are understood. This includes accident damage and quarantine.

  • Feedback to Planning/Purchasing any concerns with parts required for specific events so that any issues can be resolved.

  • Provide visibility of the current component supply status for each event to stakeholders.

  • Ensure SAP accuracy at all times and highlight any data discrepancies.

  • Assist in the loading of late freight for fly away races after ensuring that all parts required have been through the correct pre-fit processes.

  • Contribute to Build Department Meetings.

Candidate profile:

SAP experience is required and some motorsport experience is desirable. A good understanding of processes and procedures and to have strong communication and people skills.
