CFD Aerodynamicist (Ref REQ-200105)

Job Description

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a CFD Aerodynamicist within the Aerodynamics department.  The successful candidate would be interested in developing their career within our innovative, forward-looking Formula One team and would work within the CFD applications group. 

Key responsibilities would include:

  • Working alongside highly skilled aerodynamicists, use the most innovative approaches in CFD to develop the best overall model for Aero development
  • Identify correlation issues and demonstrate creativity to understand and resolve them, continually improving the aerodynamic development success rate
  • Provide testing and support of our existing CFD codes and processes
  • Act as a liaison between CFD developers and Aerodynamicists (CFD users) to ensure new software and processes meet the user’s requirements, including defining the process and workflow where necessary
  • Use CFD and aerodynamic understanding to improve the efficiency of our CFD process, reducing man time and time on cluster
  • Build on our tools to correlate CFD, windtunnel and track testing, to maximise the efficiency of the racecar aerodynamic development

The successful candidate would have:

  • A strong score in an Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering degree with a significant CFD content
  • A track record of learning new engineering software quickly with knowledge of high-level programming, such as Python
  • A strong understanding of aerodynamic principles and CFD theory, such as turbulence modelling, numerical stability etc.
  • Experience in effective collaboration and the ability to interact well in a team
  • Experience of practical applications of CFD to complex 3D geometries

CFD Development Engineer (Ref REQ-200037)

Job Description

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Software Development Engineer within our CFD Software Development group. The successful candidate will be responsible for development of new and existing applications to enable CFD simulations to be run more easily, efficiently and accurately. This will greatly benefit the Aerodynamics department in it’s never ending quest to develop a faster Formula One race car.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Continued development of Python/C++ applications performing CFD case setup:
    • Geometry pre-processing, including kinematic manipulation
    • Mesher/Solver boundary condition generation
    • Integration of new developments in the CFD process as well as novel non-standard approaches
  • Developing efficient, robust and maintainable software tools to enhance the CFD process:
    • Big data analytics and diagnostics
    • CFD pre- and post-processing tasks
    • Data conversion, compression and archive management
  • Supporting the use of all the above tools by the Aerodynamics department
    • Best practices
    • Troubleshooting failed cases

Candidate profile:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline with a significant software development content
  • Strong grasp of engineering mathematics including:
    • 3D Geometry
    • Linear algebra
    • Calculus
    • Numerical Methods
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to quickly adapt to rapidly changing conditions
  • Extensive understanding of object-oriented programming
    • Ideally excellent knowledge of C++ and Python
    • Similar languages are also acceptable provided strong desire to learn and become an expert in C++ and Python
  • Familiar with developing for Linux systems
  • Able and willing to read, analyse and understand large software projects with minimal support
  • Passionate about developing high quality software in a collaborative development environment
  • Strong initiative and dependability for working unsupervised against often challenging deadlines

In addition, familiarity in the following areas is desirable, but is not essential:

  • Revision control, CI/CD, Containerization and other emerging DevOps practices
  • SQL and NoSQL database paradigms
  • HPC job schedulers (e.g. LSF, Torque/Maui or SLURM)

Who you are:

  • Degree in Computer Science (or similar), or relevant experience.
  • Experience working in high performing self-organising teams, delivering solutions to complex problems.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working with a strong customer focus.
  • Experience using XP practices such as paired programming, TDD and CI / CD.
  • Experience delivering software within a devops culture.
  • Significant experience of at least one programming language, ideally C#, and strong knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP).
  • Extensive knowledge of the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Excellent communication skills and experience managing key stakeholder relationships.
  • Able to create and nurture a culture of problem solvers eager to tackle new challenges.
