Who you are:

  • Degree in Computer Science (or similar), or relevant experience.

  • Extensive knowledge of the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and willingness to own delivery from requirement analysis through to deployment.

  • Experience with microservice based architecture design.

  • Experience using XP practices such as paired programming, TDD and CI/CD.

  • Advocate for delivering software within a DevOps culture and the benefits this approach has.

As an Industrial Placement student, you will be a valued member of the Electronics Group. The electronics group designs and develops both on and off car electronic systems. The scope of the requirements means that there is the opportunity for innovation and ingenuity across all areas.

As part of this group, you will be responsible for:

  • Design and development of electronic components and systems

  • Component testing for both development and reliability, including full documentation.

  • Process development across the electronics group.

  • Fault finding and root cause investigation of electronic and electrical components.

Candidate profile:

You will have a strong background in electrical or electronics engineering with excellent investigative skills and sound attention to detail. Experience in C, C++ and C# is beneficial.

If you want to gain experience in a high performing Engineering Group but do not know which area to work in, this engineering experience is for you. Achieving exposure to design, operations, and race support the role will give you the perfect window into what it’s like working in a Formula One Team.

During the 13 months you will be designing, developing processes, understanding new and existing manufacturing technologies, working with suppliers and all areas of operations and build. You will also get the opportunity to work in Race support at key points through the year.

Job description:

As part of the Design Process Development team, you will be involved in the design process, development and manufacture of a large variety of formula 1 component’s such as suspension, transmission, chassis, electronics and hydraulics. You will be involved in developing the standards within our design engineering team, creating better design specifications to ensure engineering continuity. You will gain exposure to design, structural analysis, technical purchasing, manufacturing, suppliers, and the race team. This role is key to our creativity and high exacting standards within the Team.

Candidate profile:

You will have a strong academic background in a mechanical engineering discipline. Some machining knowledge would be preferred but is not essential and a CAD exposure would be a good advantage. High motivation with a can do attitude is required to keep up with the fast paced nature of this role.

Job Description

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and rising star George Russell.

As part of the Controls Systems Applied Performance team you will be involved in all aspects of the on-car control system, generating an understanding of the control systems, the mechanical systems they govern and the race driver’s interaction with the systems. You will immerse yourself in remote operational Control Systems Support of our race cars during events, providing real-time monitoring and post session analysis. You will create detailed Pre and Post event reports relating to the various performance controls systems including Race Starts, Driveability, Powertrain operation to empower the trackside controls members decisions.

  • Assisting with the development and release cycle of on-board embedded control system code using Matlab Simulink

  • On-car systems calibration and analysis using car data and metric tools using Matlab and data viewer analysis platforms

  • Functionality development of the physical and virtual control testing environments

  • Provide support for new and existing powertrain systems / components during inhouse dyno testing and support in house Virtual Track Tests

Candidate profile:

You will be aiming for a strong degree (eg. A First or 2:1) in a relevant engineering discipline with some specialisation in control systems. You will have awareness of applications such as Matlab, Simulink, and be very proficient in Office-based tools use and programming (Excel).

We’re pleased to announce a new Cost Analyst Industrial Placement opportunity. Reporting to one of the Senior Cost Analysts you will be supporting the Cost Analysis team with their cost cap compliance activities working closely with other Cost Analysts in the Design Office, Operations, the Race Team and the Finance Team. With the new Financial Regulations now firmly in place, it is essential that we remain financially sustainable and compliant, whilst maximising our cost efficiency. This is an ideal position for an inquisitive engineering student to gain valuable experience in the financial activities in the operational and engineering areas of a world leading motorsport team.

Key Accountabilities:

Being mentored by one of the Cost Analysts, you will:

  • Support the Cost Analysis Department as well as operational and technical areas with a variety of cost cap related activities. This will include:

    • Costing data quality improvements and data analysis

    • Process optimisation and automation

    • Cost reduction

    • FIA / Finance reporting

    • Non-F1 activities

  • Work with Finance and other Cost Analysts to ensure consistency of approach and methodologies, aligning processes and standardising practices.

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the F1 Financial Regulations.

Through a placement in Data Quality, you will make a significant contribution to enabling the team to learn at a greater rate by improving the quality of data available. You will join a small and dynamic team and use your innate curiosity and creativity to quickly understand technical problems and contribute to their solution. Over the course of a thirteen-month placement, you will collaborate with other technology areas. This may include devising and following experiments, analysing experimental data, and improving our capability to produce accurate and reliable measurements.

Skills you could learn during your placement:

  • Understanding experimental testing procedures and measurement capabilities

  • Planning experimental testing with data quality in mind

  • Optimising applications of the latest sensor technology

The Test & Development Team has a very broad remit within MGP, looking after everything from fixtures used to test out components in R&D, servo hydraulic rigs used to sign off components prior to track use and Pit Equipment required to set-up, run and service the car, both at the factory and the track. We are looking for an IP to support the testing side of our activities, whether it be learning to test some of our components or developing better and more efficient ways to run those tests and analyse the data. There may also be the possibility to test your design abilities. If you’re inspired by world class engineering and the pursuit of excellent – this is a great place to start.

Within the Performance Department there are various roles in the Vehicle Dynamics Group and Simulation & Modelling Team, you will join a department focussed on developing mathematical simulation & modelling capabilities, understanding and improving vehicle performance. The scope of the industrial placement roles is far reaching, and you will contribute to enhance the capabilities of the Performance Department.

Your direct responsibilities may include areas such as:

  • Analysis of track and simulation data to optimise car performance.

  • Development of new vehicle models and simulations to cater for specific request from the Performance Department or Race Engineering.

  • Provide factory-based support to the Race Team and aid the decision-making at race events.

  • Advance analysis techniques to better understand and quantify vehicle performance.

  • Ensuring highest quality, by supporting the testing and regression of new and current simulations, by familiarising and extending our current testing framework.

  • Support testing and development of new software infrastructural capabilities, such as vehicle or track parameters databases, to sign-off novel solutions for the department.

  • Improve current processes and maximise the Department’s output by creating new solutions.

Recruitment timings and process:

Typically, our Industrial Placements are for a thirteen-month period with an anticipated start date of 3 July 2023.

By the time the placement begins, you must have completed a minimum of two years at university, with at least one academic year of study remaining after your placement.

You will also complete an online application form including details of your academic study and relevant experience. Following your application, you will be emailed links to our online testing. As we continue to grow and diversify, we are looking for an experienced Senior CAE Process Engineer to join the team, reporting directly to the Lead CAE Process Engineer.

What we’re looking for:

The successful candidate will be involved in the definition and the implementation of the governing methods and processes oriented toward structural analysis applications, from modelling efficiencies to processing of results. They will possess an inherent ability to communicate directives and to oversee structural activities through the broad Design organisation.

With a strong academic background in mechanical engineering, they will need to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of Finite Element software and structural analysis methods with an emphasis on life and damage assessments, and on vibration dynamics. A very open-minded spirit and the ability to develop methods adapted to F1 specific requirements will be essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development, the deployment and the maintenance of structural oriented analysis tools (both CAE and hand calcs) for stress analysts and designers

  • Develop a relation of confidence and act as Stress technical support within the DO

  • Ensure the continuous improvement of simulation and analysis methodologies, and processes

  • Support the development of the Design material databases

  • Provide Stress analysis assistance to Design groups in critical design periods.

Candidate Profile:

As well as being a passionate and a hardworking team player, the ideal candidate will possess:

  • Mechanical engineering degree or similar qualification with a strong background in Finite Element methods and a broad knowledge of non-linear analysis techniques.

  • In-depth understanding in metallic and composites material characterisations, analysis and processing (NL, fatigue, failure prediction…) would be essential.

  • Knowledge in dynamic analysis fields would be an advantage

  • Proven experience in Hyperworks and Abaqus would be essential.

  • Knowledge in fatigue tools such as FE-Safe would be essential

  • Coding experience in Python and VBA would be essential, and in TCL desirable

  • Knowledge in optimisation tools such as Optistruct, Tosca, TruForm or OptiAssist would be an advantage

  • Experience of 3DX design is of benefit as well as proficiency in Excel

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design of electrical system topology, architecture and harness design across a range of projects for both F1 and Non-F1.

Applied Science is the commercial engineering division of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team with the mission to leverage the best motorsport technologies to deliver performance for customers across the domains of land, sea and air.

An exciting position has become available within the Simulation and Modelling group for a new Simulation and Modelling Engineer. This position will report directly to the Lead Simulation and Modelling Engineer.

We are looking for engineers with the appropriate mathematical, numerical modelling and vehicle dynamics skills along with the ability to write quality code towards the development of simulations in our current environments.

The role:

As our Simulation and Modelling Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and maintain physical models, sub-models and simulation algorithms to meet the requirements of our current simulation methodologies

  • Research and use appropriate technologies continuously innovate and develop our models and simulation further, while pragmatically meeting the engineering requirements of the Team

  • Interact internally and directly with other groups within the Team to provide solutions supporting objective technical decision making

  • Ensure the on-going quality and correlation of the simulations against track and rig data to maintain the validity of the simulation results

Candidate Profile:

As well as being a passionate and hardworking team player, the ideal candidates will possess:

  • A mechanical or aeronautical engineering degree (Master or PhD) or similar qualification, however the skills, the experience, the ability to learn, the energy and the attitude are most important

  • Excellent grounding in engineering numerical methods, classical mechanics, and multi-body dynamics. Relevant experience in non-linear programming techniques and optimal control will be considered beneficial

  • Conversant with engineering software tools and object-oriented coding languages
