The Mercedes Formula One Team is looking for talented individuals with the motivation and determination to succeed in this challenging and rewarding environment.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a mechanical engineer to join our Powertrain Integration and Transmission Design Department. This group is part of the Design Office at Brackley and covers a number of key performance and reliability differentiators of the F1 car, with responsibility for the gearbox, hydraulics, PU cooling systems, fuel system, pneumatics and exhausts.

Reporting to one of the Lead Powertrain Integration Design Engineers you will create and deliver ‘Right First Time’ innovative engineering solutions making a tangible contribution to the team success.     

You will work collaboratively as part of a small design group, applying thoughtful and curious nature to a range of stimulating challenges to meet the increasing demand and requirements across a range of disciplines. Our focus is the Formula One Team but this role will also offer exposure to Applied Science, where we leverage the best motorsport technologies for our customers across the domains of land, sea, and air.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Take technical ownership of powertrain design projects from formative idea to end of use.

  • Produce schemes, designs and drawings, and collaborate with departments including Dyno, Test & Development, Aerodynamics, and Vehicle Performance.

  • Work with our in-house machine shop, external supply chain, inspection, and quality departments to ensure we deliver the best value between performance, reliability and cost.

  • You will apply engineering calculations to support your own design work in pursuit of “right first time” whilst pushing the boundaries and organise suitable containments for feedback that is generated during prove-out, at the race event, or during servicing.

  • Work closely with our colleagues at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains to identify, measure and deliver the best overall lap time solutions to the circuit.

  • Develop relationships with technical partners to push boundaries and develop new capabilities.

  • Support design activities across the group, which will include engineering projects outside of motorsport as part of our Applied Science programmes.

Candidate Profile

You have an open and curios mind, a creative approach to engineering problems and are keen to develop yourself further in a demanding role.

Capable of working on your own and applying your reflective nature to understand a problem your open and honest communication style means you also relish collaborating in a team setting to deliver effective cross departmental integration and results

With a broad overview of your subject, you enjoy discussing technical concepts and finding solutions to problems by applying your interpretive skills, attention to details and dependable judgment.

Essential skills and experience

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification at 2:1 level or above.

  • Proven in-depth understanding of mechanical design and their applications with a solid first principles understanding, materials and manufacturing techniques.

  • Experience of Catia V5/3DX Composite and surfacing design package would be beneficial.

  • Use of finite element analysis tools (ideally with Catia V5/3DX package) and hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.

  • Demonstrable experience across some but not all of the following areas: Low pressure fluid system design (i.e.: cooling systems, chassis fuel systems), Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Composite materials design/manufacture, Power Unit Integration, Additive Layer Design/Manufacture, Engine Design, Heat Exchanger calculation and design.

Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Structural Analysis Engineer to join our Powertrain Integration and Transmission Design Department. This group forms part of the main Design Office at our Brackley campus, and is responsible for a number of key performance and reliability differentiators of the F1 car including the gearbox, hydraulics, fuel system, cooling systems and Power Unit integration.

Reporting to our Lead Structural Analysis Engineer (Powertrain), you will create and deliver “Right First Time” engineering to complex problems. Your solutions, experience and judgement will make a tangible contribution to the on-and off- track success of the team.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Take technical ownership of the structural approval of complex Powertrain assemblies and make the correct judgements on how to approach the analysis within the time constraints.

  • Static and dynamic analysis of both metallic and composite components, covering environmental, abuse and fatigue cases.

  • Able to use a broad suite of analysis techniques such as contact, non-linear material, large displacement, modal, and optimisation.

  • Assist the group with organising suitable containments for feedback that is generated during prove-out, at the race event, or during servicing.

  • Work closely with our colleagues at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains to identify, measure and deliver the best overall lap time solutions to the circuit.

  • Develop relationships with designers, cost engineers, project engineers and Operations to play a key role in delivering the best value between performance, reliability and cost.

  • Push the boundaries in pursuit of new capabilities, emerging toolsets and reporting methods.

  • Support analysis activities across the group, which will include engineering projects outside of motorsport as part of our Applied Science programmes.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of five years of demonstrable design experience in a high end technology application (for example: F1 / LMP / WRC / automotive manufacturer or supplier / aerospace / defence)

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification at 2:1 level or above.

  • Communicative and collaborative skills to deliver effective cross departmental results.

  • Self-sufficient and self-reliant – able to critically appraise own results and the work of others, working autonomously and with minimal supervision.

  • Not afraid to ask, aware of your own blind spots, willing to learn, and accepting of change.

Advantageous (but not essential) Experience

  • Detailed knowledge of Hyperworks and Abaqus simulation software, data analysis including use of ATLAS 10, linear vibration instrumentation and testing, use of 3DX/Catia V5 for CAD, general mechanical design experience, additive manufacturing (metallics and plastics).

  • Non-structural composite design, additive manufacturing (metallics and plastics), data analysis including use of ATLAS 10, basic use of CFD and FEA tools to support your concepts and designs.

Key accountabilities / duties include:

  • Established track record using CFD to understand external aerodynamic flowfields, for example in the aerospace, automotive, sports aerodynamics or motorsport sectors.

  • Proven ability to deliver significant and innovative CFD-based projects, eg improvements in methodology, process or approach to modelling

  • A strong understanding of practical and theoretical considerations such as turbulence modelling, numerical stability etc

  • A methodical approach to solving correlation issues, appreciating the validity and limitations of different methodologies and sources of data, eg CFD, experimental, track

  • A capacity for learning new engineering software quickly with knowledge of a programming language such as Python
